In a thrilling second Twenty20 International Match at Old Trafford on Friday, England debutant, Gus Atkinson, made a memorable debut by capturing four crucial wickets. This outstanding performance helped the home team secure a resounding 95-run victory over New Zealand.
England’s victory in the 2nd T20I gave them a commanding 2-0 lead in the four-match series, following on their remarkable seven-wicket success at Chester-le-Street just two days previously. The stars of the show in this overwhelming triumph were Jonny Bairstow and Harry Brook.
Jonny Bairstow produced an outstanding innings, remaining unbeaten with 86 runs, while Brook added to the show with his courageous 67 in England’s total of 198-4. The fast bowler Gus Atkinson, in a fantastic debut performance, recorded extraordinary figures of 4-20, a feat that hadn’t been achieved by an England debutant at this level. He topped off his remarkable showing by clinching three wickets in a single over, thus sealing the game. New Zealand, tasked with chasing down a daunting target of 199, fell to a meager 103 all out.
From the beginning, New Zealand failed to gain any momentum, with Tim Seifert emerging as the leading scorer with 39 runs. Only two other batsmen, Glenn Phillips (22) and Mark Chapman (15) managed to reach double digits. Their innings got off to a difficult start, with the team at 8-2, as Devon Conway chipped one to Liam Livingstone at deep square leg, granting the 25-year-old fast Atkinson his maiden International wicket.
Seifert’s downfall came when he launched Atkinson’s delivery high into the Manchester sky, only for wicketkeeper Buttler to grab an outstanding catch. In a thrilling 14th over, Southee and Lockie Ferguson both met their dismissal, as England continued their domination on the field.
“Gus [Atkinson] has been on an upward curve very quickly, so to get him around the dressing room – making friendships with the guys and the coaching staff – is really important. His performance today was brilliant.”
“Harry Brook played brilliantly again; we know what a class player he is. There’s a lot of noise around him at the moment and all credit must go to him – he doesn’t seem affected at all, he’s no different around the group and he’s playing brilliantly well. It’s a great problem for us to have,” England captain Jos Buttler said in the post-match presentation.
