In a nail-biting eliminator match between Mumbai Indians New York and Washington Freedom of MLC 2023, MINY defeated WF by 16 runs. Trent Boult and Dewald Brevis were the super performers from the MINY side.
In a thrilling match of MLC 2023 at Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas, MI New York secured their spot in the Challenger match of Major League Cricket after defeating Washington Freedom in the eliminator.
Opting to bowl first, Washington Freedom won the toss, and MI New York faced a shaky start.
They lost their opener, Monank Patel, cheaply in the third over, and Nicholas Pooran followed suit soon after, failing to make an impact with the bat.
As MI New York struggled to put runs on the board, Shayan Jahangir lost his wicket in the tenth over with the team nearing the 50-run mark. However, Dewald Brevis and Tim David came to the rescue, building a crucial partnership that helped the team cross the 100-run mark.
Tim David, unfortunately, fell in the sixteenth over after a blistering knock, and Dewald Brevis scored a significant half-century but lost his wicket in the seventeenth over. New York’s total suffered as David Wiese got run out in the following over, and Rashid Khan lost his wicket on the final ball of the innings. Steven Taylor remained not out with 15 runs off 12 balls.
MI New York finished their 20 overs with a total of 141 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Saurabh Netravalkar took two wickets for Washington Freedom, while Justin Dill, Akeal Hosein, and Marco Jansen each picked up one wicket.
During the second innings, Washington Freedom faced a tremulous start as opener Matthew Short lost his wicket early on. However, Andries Gous and Mukhtar Ahmed managed to stabilize the innings. Unfortunately, Gous couldn’t capitalize on his decent start and lost his wicket in the eighth over as Washington approached the 50-run mark.
Mukhtar Ahmed’s wicket fell at the start of the eleventh over, and captain Moises Henriques followed suit, making it difficult for Washington Freedom to build a strong partnership and chase down the target.
Obus Pienaar also lost his wicket cheaply in the subsequent over, and Glenn Phillips’ fighting knock ended in the fifteenth over, leaving Washington with a glimmer of hope for the chase.
Akeal Hosein and Marco Jansen fought valiantly, guiding Washington Freedom past the 100-run mark with their partnership. However, Hosein lost his wicket in the eighteenth over, and Marco Jansen followed him in the same over.
In the final over, Justin Dill also fell, and Washington Freedom’s innings came to a close at 125 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their 20 overs. With this victory, MI New York advanced to the Challenger match, while Washington Freedom’s inaugural season in Major League Cricket came to an end.
MI New York’s Trent Boult showcased his world-class bowling abilities by picking up four wickets, and Nosthush Khenjige contributed with two wickets, while David Wiese took one wicket.
