Royal Challengers Bangalore’s star player Virat Kohli has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first batter to score 8,000 runs in the IPL.
Continuing his record-breaking journey in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), Virat Kohli achieved a remarkable milestone during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) Eliminator match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Leading the batting charts in IPL 2024 and wearing the Orange Cap, Kohli became the first player to surpass 8,000 runs in the prestigious T20 league.
Although the former RCB captain got off to a promising start, he couldn’t turn it into a significant innings as he usually does. Kohli was dismissed for 33 runs off 24 balls, hitting three fours and a six, by his former RCB teammate Yuzvendra Chahal.
Despite not scoring big against Rajasthan Royals, Kohli added another impressive achievement to his illustrious career by becoming the first-ever player to reach the 8,000-run milestone in the IPL. He needed just 29 runs in this match to reach this historic landmark and now has a total of 8,004 runs from 252 IPL matches. Throughout his IPL career, Kohli has also amassed a record eight centuries and 55 half-centuries, representing RCB since the inaugural season in 2008.
No other player has yet reached the 7,000-run mark. Shikhar Dhawan is the closest with 6,769 runs, followed by Rohit Sharma with 6,628 runs. David Warner and Suresh Raina round out the top five scorers.
Previously, Kohli matched Chris Gayle’s record by surpassing the 700-run mark in a single season. Gayle achieved this feat twice for RCB in 2012 and 2013, while Kohli first reached this mark in 2016 and repeated his high-scoring form in IPL 2024.
Virat Kohli accumulated 741 runs across 15 matches for RCB in the IPL 2024. The former RCB captain has maintained an impressive strike rate of 154.69 in these games. Averaging over 60, Kohli has recorded five half-centuries, the highest by any batsman this season.
