Due to personal reasons, Jason Roy has withdrawn from the upcoming TATA IPL 2024, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have announced Phil Salt as his replacement.
The franchise is facing a major setback as they heavily relied on him for the upcoming IPL season. Salt, who represented Delhi Capitals last year and remained unsold in the auction, is entering his second IPL season.
Purchased at his reserve price of INR 1.5 crore, the dynamic English wicket-keeper batter made headlines with two consecutive T20I centuries against the West Indies in December. His 48-ball century in the 4th T20I at Trinidad is also noteworthy as the joint-fastest for England.
KKR now has two overseas keeper-batters to consider, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Salt himself in the mix. Salt’s explosive batting prowess positions him as a solid replacement for KKR, addressing their concerns with the opening combination over the last two seasons.
“Kolkata Knight Riders have named Phil Salt as a replacement for Jason Roy after the latter pulled out of the upcoming TATA IPL 2024 owing to personal reasons. Having remained unsold in the auction after representing Delhi Capitals last year, this will be Salt’s second season in the IPL.”
“Bought at his reserve price of INR 1.5 crore, the aggressive wicket-keeper batter from England scored two consecutive T20I centuries against the West Indies in December last year. His 48-ball century in the 4th T20I at Trinidad is also the joint-fastest for England,” read the statement from IPL.
Salt has participated in 19 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 21 T20Is representing England. Interestingly, he marked his debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Arun Jaitley Stadium last year. In the IPL 2024 season, Salt secured the third-highest run tally for Delhi Capitals (DC), trailing behind Axar Patel (283) and David Warner (516). During IPL 2023, the former DC player scored 218 runs in nine games. On the other hand, Jason Roy, a former batter for Kolkata Knight Riders, accumulated 285 runs in eight games in the previous season.
In a recent development, Earlier KKR selected Dushmantha Chameera as the replacement for Gus Atkinson in IPL 2024. The Sri Lankan fast bowler joined KKR at his reserve price of INR 50 lakh. Under the captaincy of Iyer, Kolkata Knight Riders, former champions, will kick off their IPL 2024 campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Eden Gardens on March 23.
