The Mumbai Indians had a disappointing run in the IPL 2024 season with Hardik Pandya leading the team, sparking discussions about Rohit Sharma’s potential departure from the squad.
In the midst of all the buzz surrounding the Indian Premier League (IPL), there’s been quite a stir thanks to Pakistani cricket icon Wasim Akram. This time, he’s turned his attention to Indian cricket sensation Rohit Sharma and the possibilities that lie ahead for him in the IPL.
According to Wasim Akram, Rohit Sharma might bid farewell to the Mumbai Indians (MI) before IPL 2025 rolls around. Akram expressed his wish for the 37-year-old to join the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), labeling Rohit as a “great player.” He also noted that Rohit’s inclusion in the KKR squad, if it does come to fruition, would bolster the team’s batting lineup. Akram highlighted KKR’s existing mentorship under Gautam Gambhir and leadership by Shreyas Iyer as additional strengths.
“I have a feeling he won’t be at Mumbai Indians next season. I would love to see him at KKR. Imagine him open there, Gauti as a mentor, and Iyer as a captain, they will have a very strong batting unit, on that wicket. He bats very well on any wicket, he is that great a player. But it will be good to see him at KKR,” as quoted by India Today.
Akram’s recent comments have caught people’s attention, especially considering the possibility of him mentoring Gautam Gambhir, the former KKR captain. And the speculation about Rohit possibly leaving MI, a team he’s led to five IPL titles, has got everyone talking about how it could shake up the league.
But let’s not forget, Akram’s remarks are just speculation at this point. The IPL 2025 player auction is still a few months away, and both MI and KKR’s plans are still under wraps. Whether Rohit Sharma will stick with MI or make a move to KKR is something we’ll have to wait and see unfold.
Now, speaking of Rohit’s performance in IPL 2024, he started off strong, even smashing a century against CSK on 14 April. But lately, his form has dipped a bit, with just 69 runs in the last six matches. So far this season, he’s managed to score 330 runs from 12 matches, maintaining a strike-rate of 152.78 and an average of 30.
