In the recently concluded five-match T20I series between India and West Indies, where both teams were fighting for the series win until Rovman Powell-led West Indies defeated Team India in the last game and sealed it with a 3-2 margin. Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian batter has given a bold statement for the Indian team before the Asia Cup 2023.
The ‘Men in Blue’ demonstrated tremendous commitment to level the series after dropping the first two matches. However, in the final match hosted in Lauderhill, Florida, notable performances by players like Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran, and Romario Shepherd powered the West Indies to victory, securing an eight-wicket win.
While certain aspects criticized the Indian team, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar highlighted the fact there’s no disgrace in losing to the two-time T20 World Cup champions, who feature multiple game-changers in their lineup. Gavaskar remarked that the series loss should be viewed as a wake-up call by Hardik Pandya and the team, pushing them to enhance their performance.
“The loss to West Indies should not be a dampener. Don’t forget that they have won the ICC T20 World Cup twice, and their players are match-winners for the different franchises they play for in the IPL. So, they are a top-class T20 team, and there’s no shame in losing to them,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.
“It should be a wake-up call, though, to see the areas where India needs to improve to strengthen its side. Some of those who were rested for this series may not be around for too long, so their replacements need to be found pretty quickly too, as the next ICC T20 World Cup is just a year away,” he added.
Team India legend Sunil Gavaskar was recently felicitated at Queen’s Park Cricket Club
One of the greatest batsmen in the history of the game, Sunil Gavaskar’s cricketing prowess remains unparalleled. A major tribute was paid to him during the second Test at Queen’s Park Cricket Club in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Brian Lara, the great figure from the West Indies, had the distinction of felicitating Gavaskar.
This particular Test has special significance as it represented the 100th Test match between India and the West Indies. To celebrate this extraordinary occasion, members of the Queen’s Park Cricket Club gifted Gavaskar with a significant memento. Expressing his thanks and cherishing the experience, the 74-year-old cricket great uploaded photographs of the event alongside Brian Lara on his Instagram account.“With the ‘Prince of Trinidad’, Brian Lara, and Nigel Camacho, president of QPCC, after the lovely felicitation by Queens Park Cricket Club in Trinidad. My home away from home. Much love and gratitude to my West Indian fans,” Gavaskar captioned the post on Instagram.
