Wasim Jaffer feels that Suryakumar Yadav will get another chance in the third ODI but urges caution in his aggressive play.
Two years back, there were high hopes surrounding Suryakumar Yadav’s shift from T20I cricket to the ODI format, especially with the upcoming World Cup on the horizon.
Initially, he showed promise by scoring two fifties in his first six innings, positioning himself as a potential backup at No.4 for Shreyas Iyer in ODIs. However, as the World Cup draws nearer, Suryakumar’s once-bright future seems to be clouded with uncertainties.
In the 17 innings that followed his last half-century (his second in 25 appearances), Suryakumar’s form took a hit. His average dropped to a mere 13.43, managing only 215 runs, with just one innings crossing the 25-run mark.
Most concerning was a string of three consecutive ducks he faced earlier this year. Former cricketer Wasim Jaffer expressed that Suryakumar might get one more chance in the third ODI. However, with the rumors around the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, it could become challenging for him to secure a place in the team.
Jaffer pointed out that Suryakumar has a tendency to play high-risk shots, which often results in losing his wicket. To get success in this format, it becomes essential for Suryakumar Yadav to reconsider his approach and play with more caution.
As the Asia Cup is not too far, the pressure to perform and deliver is definitely going to be on Suryakumar Yadav who needs to rediscover his form and make a strong case for his inclusion in the team. Only time will tell if he can turn the tide and regain his position as a promising player for India’s ODI squad.
“He will probably get one more chance, in the third ODI. And that’s probably it because KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer will return and he will find it difficult to get into the side,” Jaffer told ESPNcricinfo.
Wasim Jaffer Urges Suryakumar Yadav to Rethink Risky Playstyle for Success:
The rumors around the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer for the Asia Cup if come true then it could spell the end of Surya’s Journey. Jaffer further says, to thrive in this format it becomes crucial to adapt or change your approach towards the game.
“The way he bats, it takes high-risk options and he looks to hit boundaries which makes him lose his wicket. It is his nature to take riskier options and he needs to change that especially in this format,” Jaffer added.
