Yashasvi Jaiswal has joined Virat Kohli in the annals of Indian cricket history, marking a remarkable streak in the series with record-breaking performances.
In a stellar feat, Yashasvi Jaiswal, the standout Indian opener, has equaled Virat Kohli’s longstanding record for the highest runs scored in a Test series against England. With two double centuries in the ongoing series, Jaiswal accumulated an impressive 655 runs in four Tests, echoing Kohli’s tally during England’s tour of India in 2016/17.
In the Ranchi Test, Jaiswal approached the crease with 37 runs needed to equal Kohli’s milestone of 618 runs set during the 2016-17 series. Despite a tense moment with a DRS review against Tom Hartley, Jaiswal’s focus remained unwavering as he swiftly reached the required runs, matching Kohli’s record. However, his innings had its share of twists, including a brilliant catch by James Anderson ending his innings and a close run-out scare with Rohit Sharma.
As the series unfolds, the 22-year-old is eyeing further milestones. He aims to emulate Sunil Gavaskar as the second Indian to surpass the 700-run mark in a bilateral series, with the upcoming Dharamshala Test providing a potential stage for glory. Additionally, he targets breaking the records held by Graham Gooch and Joe Root for the most runs in a single India vs England Test series, currently at 752 and 737 runs respectively.
Jaiswal’s heroics in the ongoing series against England have been nothing short of phenomenal. From his aggressive 80 in Hyderabad to the monumental 209 in Vizag, and another double century in Rajkot, he has been the linchpin of India’s success. Notably, his consecutive double hundreds place him in esteemed company alongside Vinod Kambli and Virat Kohli.
The young batsman’s rapid ascent also positioned him as the Indian player with the highest run count after 8 Tests, showcasing an impressive total of 971 runs. This achievement placed him just behind the iconic Don Bradman, who accumulated 1210 runs in the corresponding timeframe.
Meanwhile, India clinched a remarkable five-wicket victory against the Ben Stokes-led side at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi. With this win, Rohit Sharma’s team secured the series 3-1, marking their 17th consecutive Test series win at home.
