In the first session of the ongoing 5th Test match, Shubman Gill pulled off an extraordinary running catch that led to the dismissal of Ben Duckett.
The sting of India’s heart-wrenching loss to Australia in the 2023 World Cup final still lingers, and Sunil Gavaskar managed to resurrect those emotions on Thursday while providing commentary during the 5th Test between India and England in Dharamsala.
Gill sprinted a considerable distance to position himself under the ball, which had been mistimed by the England opener. The atmosphere erupted in celebration, with even Sunil Gavaskar joining in. The former captain, however, couldn’t help but draw parallels to a catch taken by Travis Head that dismissed Rohit Sharma in Ahmedabad. Head not only made a game-changing catch, causing the Indian innings to stagnate, but he also went on to score a century, leading Australia to chase down 240 and secure their sixth 50-over World Cup title. While the catch bore a resemblance to Kapil Dev’s iconic moment in the 1983 World Cup final, Gavaskar opted for Head’s example, given its more recent occurrence.
“It’s never easy to catch these. Running backwards… This is reminiscent of the Rohit Sharma dismissal in the World Cup final. He was caught in the same way by Travis Head. Look at the embrace from the teammates. They know how difficult it was. His long levers made him reach out. Terrific stuff, what a cricketer,” Gavaskar said on air.
