In the fifth Test against England, veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin achieved a remarkable feat by surpassing the 18-year-old record held by the legendary Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan.
On a memorable Saturday, March 9, at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, Ravichandran Ashwin showcased his brilliance by securing his 36th five-wicket haul. In the final match of the red-ball series against England, the off-spinner displayed exceptional skills, claiming five wickets for 77 runs in England’s second innings.
During the third day of the match, Ashwin dismissed Zak Crawley, Ben Stokes, Ollie Pope, and Ben Foakes, adding another feather to his cap. Notably, this achievement placed him in the illustrious company of Muralitharan, Warne, and Kumble, all of whom had also accomplished a five-wicket haul in their 100th Test appearances.
In a remarkable feat, Ravichandran Ashwin surpassed Muttiah Muralitharan’s record by delivering his best bowling figures in his 100th Test. The seasoned spinner claimed a total of nine wickets, showcasing his prowess with four wickets for 51 runs in the first innings and an impressive five wickets for 77 runs in the second.
It’s worth noting that Muralitharan had left his mark in his 100th Test against Bangladesh in Chattogram back in 2006. His outstanding performance included figures of 9 for 141 runs, with three wickets in the first innings and a remarkable six wickets for 54 runs in the second innings.
