Following India’s defeat in the initial Test against England, the ICC issued an official reprimand to fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah.
Jasprit Bumrah received an official reprimand from the ICC for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct in the Hyderabad match.
In the 81st over of England’s second innings in the first Test, a noteworthy incident took place between Bumrah and Pope. This occurred towards the end of the match when, during a run between the wickets, Bumrah impeded Ollie Pope’s path, leading to an unnecessary collision.
While attempting a run with non-striker Rehan Ahmed, Pope found himself in a collision with Jasprit Bumrah. It appeared that Bumrah intentionally obstructed the path of the England batter. Post-match, Bumrah owned up to the incident and accepted the penalty imposed by match referee Richie Richardson.
Later in the innings, Bumrah claimed Ollie Pope’s wicket, denying the England player a well-deserved double-century. In his fresh spell, Bumrah delivered an off-cutter. Pope attempted a reverse scoop but failed to connect, resulting in the loss of his off-stump.
Bumrah’s breach was related to Article 2.12, which deals with “Inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee, or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match.”
As Pope made his way back to the dressing room, Bumrah and the rest of the Indian team applauded him for his exceptional batting display. Bumrah, who had taken four wickets in the second innings, was the one who finally got Pope out. Pope’s incredible innings of 196 runs, which set a new record, was crucial in England’s eventual triumph.
According to an ICC media statement, Bumrah has been found in violation of Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This incident marks his initial offense within the last 24 months. If he accumulates three additional demerit points over the next two years, he will face a suspension, resulting in missing one Test or two limited-overs matches.
