Heinrich Klaasen’s sensational knock of 174 from just 83 deliveries propelled South Africa to a resounding 164-run victory over Australia in the fourth one-day International at SuperSport Park last Friday.
Klaasen and David Miller put on a remarkable fifth-wicket partnership of 222 runs off just 94 deliveries, propelling South Africa to a formidable total of 416 for five. This marked the fifth-highest score for South Africa in one-day internationals. In response, they bowled out Australia for 252, setting up a crucial series decider in Johannesburg.
Klaasen’s incredible innings featured 13 fours and 13 sixes before he was caught on the boundary off the final ball of the innings. The partnership with Miller was a game-changer, with Miller remaining unbeaten on 82.
Australia faced a potential setback as their in-form opening batsman, Travis Head, had to retire hurt after being hit on the left hand by Gerald Coetzee. The Australian team management announced that Head would undergo a scan, with results expected on Saturday.
Initially, it seemed unlikely that such a high-scoring match would unfold, given the accurate Australian bowling and a slower-than-usual Centurion pitch. At the second drinks break, South Africa had reached 157 for three off 32 overs.
The momentum shifted when Rassie van der Dussen (62) and Klaasen combined for a 74-run partnership off 57 balls. It kicked into overdrive when David Miller, the left-hander, joined Klaasen and smashed a six off the second ball he faced from leg-spinner Adam Zampa.
Zampa had a tough day, conceding 113 runs off his 10 overs, equalling the record for most runs conceded in a one-day international, previously held by fellow Australian Mick Lewis against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2006. Marcus Stoinis went for 81 runs, while Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Ellis both conceded 79. Michael Neser, playing his first match of the series, proved to be the most economical Australian bowler, taking one wicket for 59 runs.
The fifth and final ODI between Australia and South Africa will be played on September 17th at the Wanderers Stadium. Both Australia and South Africa will be eyeing to seal the series.
