Wasim Jaffer, the former Indian cricketer, has proposed that placing Suryakumar Yadav at the sixth batting position during One Day Internationals (ODIs) would enable him to exhibit his finest style of cricket. Jaffer believes that Yadav’s skill set, which includes his dynamic playing style and excellent ability to hit powerful shots, might be effectively exploited in the role of a finisher for the Indian squad.
Despite establishing himself as a powerful presence in the shortest format of cricket, Suryakumar Yadav’s performance in One Day Internationals (ODIs) has left much to be desired. Across 26 matches in the 50-over style, he has only managed to accumulate 511 runs. However, the team’s administration continues to display unflinching trust in him, providing him an opportunity to participate in the upcoming edition of the Asia Cup.
Shifting focus, Suryakumar Yadav recently received significant advice from veteran cricketer Wasim Jaffer. Jaffer said that Suryakumar Yadav may unleash his ideal style of play by occupying the sixth batting position in ODI cricket. Jaffer stated that, at 32 years of age, Suryakumar possesses a desire to play an aggressive and energetic brand of cricket. Nonetheless, this vigor hasn’t been connected with his job in ODIs, which has subsequently impeded his success. Jaffer’s argument calls for allowing Suryakumar the chance to succeed by batting at number six, a decision that could perhaps bring better outcomes.
“Suryakumar Yadav has the game to succeed in ODI cricket. He has played under my captaincy and has made his debut in front of me. He has the talent. He started at number four in the Ranji Trophy. So, he is used to that number, even though his game since then has completely changed but he has always been a dynamic player. I think he is just finding it difficult in the transition from T20 cricket to ODI cricket,” Wasim Jaffer stated.
“In ODI cricket, you need to have different skill set. He needs to work on that. I think number six is probably a good position for him in 50 overs. At number six, he can play the kind of cricket, he wants to play. Like a finisher,” Jaffer mentioned while talking to Sports Launchpad.
Certainly, it could provide a struggle for Suryakumar Yadav to gain a place at number six in the team, considering the team management’s apparent preference for Hardik Pandya and his diversified qualities. The remaining places seem to be largely occupied, with the team management leaning towards Shreyas Iyer for the number four berth. If, by any possibility, Iyer doesn’t deliver as planned, the squad may consider turning to either Suryakumar Yadav or Tilak Varma during the upcoming Asia Cup.
