Tamim Iqbal has stepped down from the captain position of the Bangladesh Cricket Team in ODI cricket and is also to miss the Asia Cup with possible suspicion due to Injury.
Star Bangladesh batsman Tamim Iqbal has made the decision to step down as the captain of the national team in the ODI format. Recently, the 34-year-old had announced his retirement from international cricket due to disagreements with the team management. However, after a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he reversed his retirement decision.
Following the incident, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chairman Nazmul Hassan assured that the management is committed to resolving the situation and supporting Tamim, who is also dealing with an injury. Unfortunately, Tamim won’t recover in time for the upcoming Asia Cup in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The BCB is hopeful that Tamim will regain his fitness before the home series against New Zealand and be ready to participate fully in the upcoming ODI World Cup. However, specific updates on his injury are currently limited, but the expectation is that he will improve with time.
During Tamim’s absence, his opening partner, Litton Das, took charge of the team during the three-match series against Afghanistan. Litton Das, aged 28, is the likely candidate to lead Bangladesh in the marquee tournament, given his decent captaincy record with three wins in five matches.
The situation regarding Tamim’s relationship with the management remains concerning, as he has not returned to the dressing room after announcing his retirement. Despite Nazmul’s confidence in Tamim’s return, the cricketer has not provided much information on the matter.
Overall, Tamim Iqbal has been a seasoned campaigner for Bangladesh, representing the national team in 241 ODIs and amassing an impressive 8313 runs. His potential absence from the tournament would be a significant loss for the Bangla Tigers, who are determined to perform well, especially with the competition taking place in the subcontinent.
BCB management will be hoping to see him back as the World Cup 2023 is a crucial event for their team and they don’t want to miss their start batsman. World Cup 2023 is scheduled to start from October 5 to November 19.
