The wait is over as Sri Lanka, the defending champions, have at last released their roster for the highly anticipated Asia Cup. The competition is expected to begin on August 30th in Multan. Unfortunately, fans will miss witnessing Wanindu Hasaranga in action, since he will be away from this renowned event. Alongside him, major players like Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Madushanka, and Lahiru Kumara will also be sitting this one out.
The defending champions, Sri Lanka, have officially confirmed their squad for the 2023 Asia Cup, slated to take play on August 30th in Multan. It’s noteworthy to note that leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who emerged as the best run-scorer and wicket-taker in the Lanka Premier League, won’t be playing in this major tournament. This absence, coupled with players like Dushmantha Chameera, Madushanka, and Lahiru Kumara, leaves the bowling unit looking a bit weak.
Nonetheless, the team does have individuals with some international experience, but the bowling strength is a little lessened. The likes of Binura Fernando and Pramod Madushan have been called up to replace the injured players. Additionally, there’s a considerable dependence on Matheesha Pathirana and Kasun Rajitha, who’ve shown promise in recent outings.
Notably, Kusal Perera makes a comeback to the squad after a two-year absence. Unfortunately, he’s now recuperating from sickness, casting uncertainty over his participation in the early bouts. Yet, his return promises to infuse the group with much-needed expertise. Furthermore, he might confirm his status for the ODI World Cup with great performances.
Led by Dasun Shanaka, the team’s captain, Sri Lanka will commence their campaign against Bangladesh. Although Bangladesh will miss the presence of Tamim Iqbal, they’ve put forward a competitive squad for the competition. However, there’s a little lack of seasoned players in their ranks. Despite this, the leadership of Shakib Al Hasan instills confidence in the team, as they attempt to secure a berth in the Super Four stage.
For Sri Lanka, the objective remains the same: moving to the next round. The team’s league matches will be conducted in Pakistan, but they’ll have the home advantage during the Super Four matchups. The major goal is to obtain a position in the following level and once again contend for the championship crown.
