Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, has underlined the significance of Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma in the lead-up to the upcoming Asia Cup and the highly awaited 2023 ODI World Cup. He expressed that both these players are set to have vital roles for Team India in the upcoming major tournaments.
On September 2nd, at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy, a highly anticipated game awaits as Team India sets off their Asia Cup trip against their long-standing rivals, Pakistan.
In the lead-up to the opening match of this important competition, Sourav Ganguly expressed his thoughts on the team’s structure. He stressed that not only for the next Asia Cup but also for the crucial ICC competition, Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma would hold pivotal responsibilities as India’s mainstays.
“He’s (Virat Kohli) playing very well, there is no question about it. He will be India’s strength, key player, along with Rohit Sharma. Rohit’s form will be equally important. Last World Cup (2019) he got five hundreds, that’s unbelievable performance,” said Ganguly on RevSportz.
“And probably this is his first and last World Cup as captain, he might still do it in the T20 World Cup but for the ODI event, there is still four years and I don’t think he’ll be playing in another few years. Everyone will be important, and I hope they stand up and perform,” he further added.
It’s crucial to note that Virat Kohli is all prepared to compete in the forthcoming ACC event, riding high on some spectacular performances against the West Indies during the two Tests. He pulled together outstanding scores of 76 and 121 runs throughout the series, showing his top-notch form. At the same time, skipper Rohit also flaunted his batting brilliance against the West Indies, notching up scores of 103, 80, and 57 in the two Tests.
When it comes to the Asia Cup in the ODI format, Rohit and Kohli stand as India’s most effective run-scorers among the current players. Rohit takes the lead in this regard with a total of 745 runs in 22 appearances, while Kohli has accumulated 613 runs in just 11 outings. Virat Kohli finds himself just 102 runs away from surpassing the amazing milestone of 13,000 ODI runs. The explosive right-handed batsman will undoubtedly have his eyes set on hitting this milestone during the ACC event.
