Bangladesh veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been selected by Bangladesh Cricket Broad (BCB) to lead the national team in the forthcoming Asia Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially announced that experienced all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will be the captain of the national team for the upcoming Asia Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup. The selection committee is set to pick a 17-player squad for both these 50-over tournaments on Saturday, August 12.
Nazmul Hassan, the President of BCB, confirmed the news about Shakib’s leadership role for these events. He also mentioned that the squads for both tournaments will be revealed on August 12.
“We have appointed Shakib as the captain for Asia Cup and World Cup. The World Cup and Asia Cup squads will be announced tomorrow. The selectors will pick a squad of 17 members,” Nazmul told reporters at his house on August 11.
In a recent development, the cricket board held an urgent meeting to decide on the new captain for both upcoming ODI events. Among the contenders, Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz were also considered. This decision arose because the ODI captaincy position became vacant when Tamim Iqbal stepped down on August 3 due to a back injury, leading to his withdrawal from the ACC event.
Meanwhile, Shakib, who currently captains the Test and T20I teams, has previously led the Bangla Tigers in One-Day matches, including the 2011 ODI World Cup. Turning to their Asia Cup journey, Bangladesh has been grouped with Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in Group B.
Notably, Tamim, who surprisingly announced his retirement last month, reversed his decision after a meeting with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. With his ongoing recovery from an injury, Tamim aims to regain fitness in time for the prominent ICC event scheduled for October in India.
Under the leadership of Shakib, Bangladesh is set to play their first match against co-hosts Sri Lanka on Thursday, August 31, at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. The team’s inaugural match in the ODI World Cup will be against Afghanistan at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala on October 7.
