Pakistan’s Asia Cup 2023 campaign reached a disheartening conclusion when they experienced defeat against the reigning champions, Sri Lanka, in an exhilarating Super 4 showdown at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium. An intriguing aspect of the game was the visible struggle of Pakistan’s vice-captain, Shadab Khan, as he attempted to rediscover his peak form. Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, was appreciative of Shadab’s determination and contributions during the match.
Pakistan’s journey in the 2023 Asia Cup ended on a dismal note when they faced a dramatic Super 4 match against defending champions Sri Lanka at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium. The game, loaded with ups and downs, kept fans on the edge of their seats.
In their allotted 42 overs, Pakistan managed to set a goal of 252/7. Mohammad Rizwan played a critical role with a brilliant unbroken 86 off 73 balls, leading the charge. Abdullah Shafique also made a huge impact by scoring 52 from 69 balls. However, Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana and Pramod Madushan offered a serious challenge, taking important wickets, with Pathirana claiming three.
Sri Lanka, chasing the altered target of 252 runs due to the DLS technique, successfully reached it in 42 overs. Kusal Mendis played a significant role with 91 runs off 87 balls, and Charith Asalanka’s unbeaten 49 off 47 balls was vital. Pakistan’s Iftikhar Ahmed and Shaheen Afridi contributed with three and two wickets, respectively.
One significant feature of the match was Pakistan’s prominent spinner, Shadab Khan, trying to regain his form. Despite a good start to the tournament, Shadab managed to secure only two wickets in the Super 4 stage, facing a dry spell in the wicket column. Pakistan captain Babar Azam acknowledged Shadab’s efforts.
“Shadab is bowling very well but he is not taking any wickets. So that’s why you feel he is not bowling well. He is bowling well but unfortunately he is not taking any wickets. He is one of your best bowlers, Nawaz and Shadab,” Babar said.
Azam also commended Zaman Khan for his display of character and confidence, even in the face of demanding circumstances. He underscored the distinction between playing cricket at the domestic and international levels, stressing the immense pressure that comes with the latter.
“Yes Zaman Khan has shown character and is doing well in the past, in the PSL and in two PSL finals, where he bowled in the last over. So he has full confidence but International match is a different thing”, he further added.
