The star Rajasthan Royals batter and captain Sanju Samson could potentially be dropped from the Asia Cup 2023 squad. According to the Times of India, his poor performance in the West Indies series could also impact his selection in the World Cup squad.
The hope of appearing in the 2023 ODI World Cup has drifted away for Sanju Samson, the brilliant batsman from Kerala. This setback may be traced back to India’s surprising defeat versus West Indies in the recent five-match T20I series conducted in the Caribbean.
As stated by the Times of India, the wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson experienced a hard season, with scores of 12, 7, and 13 in the T20I matches and 9 and 51 in ODIs. These performances have created doubts over his inclusion in India’s 15-member roster for the forthcoming Asia Cup in 2023.
In effect, this position suggests that the possibilities for Sanju Samson to clinch a ticket in the ODI World Cup 2023 have reduced drastically.
On August 30, the Asia Cup 2023 will begin in Multan, and on September 2, India will face Pakistan in their opening match. “The Asia Cup team is likely to be the only one chosen by the selectors at this time (on August 20). The World Cup 2023 squad would be chosen later,” a source informed TOI.
Although Sanju Samson holds a good ODI average of 55.71 through 13 matches, his prospects are clouded by the projected comeback of seasoned wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul from injury. Ishan Kishan, who has shown himself as a competent opening batsman and wicketkeeper, will act as a backup choice within the team.
“Prasidh will add a fresh dimension to our speed assault since he can generate pace and bounce. It will be excellent if the selectors get to see both Bumrah and Prasidh bowl in the opening T20I against Ireland on August 18 before they choose the team for the Asia Cup,” the source said.
