Kapil Dev, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, has shared his apprehensions about the inclusion of players returning from injuries in the Indian squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023.
It’s important to highlight that the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 is going to play an important role in preparation for the much-anticipated ODI World Cup 2023, due to be hosted in India this October. This gives the Asia Cup a key opportunity for players to discover their rhythm and groove.
Although some analysts might have expressed questions about the feasibility of including Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer, Kapil Dev retains the opinion that their participation is justifiable, considering that it could prevent potential future disasters.
Considering that the complete and strongest squad is scheduled to participate in the World Cup, the Asia Cup becomes a platform to measure how well the returning players can handle the strain. KL Rahul, who is on the comeback path from a thigh ailment, is set to make appearances during the tournament. Kapil Dev highlights the importance of the player obtaining important match practice.
Ultimately, this chain of events will not only affect the Asia Cup but will also provide insights into how ready these players are for the grand stage of the World Cup.
In a recent media encounter, Kapil Dev gave his opinion about the impending World Cup in 2023. He highlighted the need for players to familiarize themselves with diverse challenges beforehand. According to him, the match practice before the World Cup would play an essential role in gauging the players’ fitness levels.
“Ideally every player should be tested out. The World Cup is so close but you still haven’t given the players a chance? What if they head to the World Cup and then get injured? The entire team will suffer. Here, at least they will get a chance to bat or bowl a little and get some rhythm going.” Kapil Dev said during the media interaction.
“Worst case scenario, if the guys get injured again during the World Cup, it will be unfair to the players who will miss out on being part of the squad.
The injured players who have returned need to be given a chance. If they are fit, then can play the World Cup,” he further added.
Kapil Dev is primarily focused on the players making a comeback and whether their bodies will be up for the challenges of the important tournament scheduled for later this year.
“There is no shortage of talent, but if they are not fit, India will have a chance to make changes to the World Cup squad right away. You have a wonderful opportunity to create a team for the World Cup and the Asia Cup is a fine platform. I want these players to go and express themselves. But if there is any sort of question mark, they don’t need to be around.
“If you do not give them a chance, it will be unfair to not just the players but also the selectors. I am aware that the World Cup is taking place in India but you need to pick the best and fittest team,” Kapil Dev concluded.
