The BCCI has finally released the strong 17-player squad for the eagerly anticipated Asia Cup 2023. Sanju Samson has also been designated as the traveling backup player. Although the board has unveiled a team that is well-balanced for the upcoming championship, the absence of the seasoned spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is drawing attention from fans.
Yuzvendra Chahal has held a major position in Indian cricket for several years. However, he was not chosen in the vital competition, with Prasidh Krishna being picked as the fifth seam bowling option instead. This action has generated doubts regarding the reasons behind it.
During a media briefing, Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of BCCI, justified this choice by explaining the factors that affected it. Agarkar pointed out that the selection committee faced a tough issue between Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. In the end, the committee voted for Kuldeep Yadav due to his recent good performances.
Ajit Agarkar said:
“Chahal is undoubtedly a terrific performer, but we had to carefully consider the overall balance of the team. Accommodating two wrist spinners in the squad would have posed significant challenges.”
Regarding the choice, Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian team, also shared his thoughts. He highlighted that the avenues for opportunities remain accessible for the trio of promising spin bowlers: R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Washington Sundar. Their chance to showcase their abilities and earn a place in the ODI World Cup 2023 squad is still very much open.
Rohit Sharma said:
“Opportunities are still available for everyone, including Ravi Ashwin, Chahal, and Sundar, to be a part of the World Cup squad.”
On the flip side, Yuzvendra Chahal, feeling let down by his absence in the Indian squad, expressed his emotions through social media. Through a tweet, he conveyed his sentiments using two sun emojis, symbolizing the belief that a new day will come.
