Recently Bangladesh white ball captain Tamim Iqbal resigned from his leadership position due to a back injury and also got ruled out of the upcoming edition of the Asia Cup tournament. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is planning to bring back Shakib Al Hasan as ODI captain for the Bangladesh Team.
Amidst a lot of commotion in the Bangladesh cricket team, with controversies surrounding top players’ retirements and captaincy issues, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is now considering its next steps. This comes after their regular One Day International (ODI) captain, Tamim Iqbal, suffered a back injury, ruling him out of the upcoming Asia Cup in 2023. Consequently, he decided to step down as the team’s captain. Interestingly, earlier, Tamim had not only given up the captaincy but also surprised everyone by announcing his retirement from cricket. However, he quickly came out of retirement after an intervention from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In the latest update, BCB president Najmul Hassan has emphasized that they are looking towards the most experienced player, Shakib Al Hasan, as the ideal candidate following Tamim Iqbal’s exit. They want to make sure Shakib is available to serve the country before appointing him as the Captain for the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup, both scheduled to begin on October 5. The board is planning to appoint him as the captain for at least two years, understanding the immense pressure the team will face at such significant events. They believe an experienced campaigner like Shakib can handle the responsibilities efficiently and guide the team effectively at the highest level of the game.
“We have not discussed captaincy yet. We have to take a break and think about it. As I have said before, if it was one series, we could have gone with the vice-captain (Litton) but now we have to think long term,” Nazmul said during a press conference in Dhaka.
“There are two problems. If we think about the long term it is one thing. But there is the World Cup as well and the pressure of the World Cup is not small. If I select a new guy and whether he can take this pressure – we need to consider that as well. If we choose someone on a long term basis and he is not available after one year, what will we do? So we need to discuss these things,” the BCB president continued.
