India secured their eighth Asia Cup championship with a convincing ten-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 final, which took place on Sunday, September 17 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Sri Lanka’s captain, Dasun Shanaka, won the toss and opted to bat first. However, this choice turned out to be a major setback as they were dismissed for a mere 50 runs, all thanks to a remarkable spell by Mohammed Siraj.
The right-arm seamer put up an outstanding performance, achieving his career-best ODI bowling figures with 6/21 in seven overs. Jasprit Bumrah (1/23 in 5 overs) and Hardik Pandya (3/3 in 2.2 overs) also made significant contributions with the ball. In response, India kicked off their innings with a new opening pair, Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill.
The pair came out with guns blazing, immediately starting to hit boundaries from the very first over. Their aggressive batting style allowed India to comfortably chase down the target in just 6.1 overs, securing their most significant victory in terms of balls remaining, with 263 balls left to spare. Kishan remained unbeaten with 23* off 18 balls, while Gill contributed 27* off 19 deliveries.
This victory enabled India to capture their eighth Asia Cup title, reaffirming their supremacy in the continental tournament. The Men in Blue stand as the most successful team in the Asia Cup, with Sri Lanka (six titles) and Pakistan (two titles) following suit closely.
