The seasoned Indian off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, expressed his dissatisfaction with individuals who were expressing doubt about the selected players, including Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma. Ravi Ashwin fully supported the selection committee’s decision to include both players for the Asia Cup 2023 tournament.
As excitement builds up for the much-awaited Asia Cup 2023, there’s been quite a buzz about India’s picked 17-member squad for the tournament. The attention is on a few prominent absences from the list, namely Yuzvendra Chahal, Sanju Samson, and Ravichandran Ashwin. These shocking exclusions have prompted intense conversations on social media and among cricket lovers.
A prominent absence is Sanju Samson, who strangely is supposed to fly to Sri Lanka as a backup for KL Rahul, purportedly due to Rahul’s minor injury issue. What drew many eyes was Samson’s exclusion from the primary squad. Fans lost no time in turning to social media to express their unhappiness, stressing Samson’s remarkable ODI average of 55 when compared to Suryakumar Yadav’s relatively modest 24.
The decision to select newcomer Tilak Varma over Samson also attracted its fair share of scrutiny. The inclusion of a young player with no prior ODI experience above the seasoned abilities of Samson had caused much speculation over the selectors’ rationale behind the move.
Ravichandran Ashwin stepped out to offer his viewpoint. He strongly supported the selectors’ decisions and criticized those who questioned the chosen players. Ashwin in his YouTube video said, “The selectors know what they are doing. In a huge country like India, when you select a squad, there will be some key players who will be missing the cut. So, just because your favorite is not there in the squad, you should not degrade the others.”
But Ashwin didn’t simply leave it at that. He made his opinion heard in favor of picking Suryakumar and Tilak, particularly emphasizing how vital it is to promote the rise of these young talents. When it came to defending the option of having Suryakumar on the team, Ashwin really stressed his amazing track record in T20Is and that special ‘x-factor’ he brings to the table. While Suryakumar might not have had a fantastic performance in ODIs, Ashwin underlined how vital it is to have consistency and provide a player with a proven ability to win matches a consistent opportunity to establish themselves.
