Australia revealed their roster of 15 players for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 on Wednesday, May 1. The tournament is set to take place in June across venues in the United States and the Caribbean.
The champions of the 2021 T20 World Cup have made some bold decisions as they aim for a second title. They’ve opted to leave out experienced batsman Steve Smith and rising star Jake Fraser-McGurk for the upcoming tournament. Smith, a veteran of four T20 World Cups, hasn’t quite lived up to expectations in the format, managing only 190 runs in 19 matches.
Fraser-McGurk, despite his impressive performances in the ongoing IPL 2024, finds himself missing from the Australian squad. His omission comes as a surprise to many considering his stellar form, including two lightning-fast half-centuries in the IPL.
In a surprising move, Cameron Green and Ashton Agar find themselves back in the mix for Australia despite lengthy absences from the T20I squad. Green hasn’t played a T20I since 2022, while Agar’s last appearance came around the same time.
Despite suffering a recent hamstring injury that forced him out of the IPL, Mitchell Marsh has been entrusted with the captaincy for Australia in the upcoming World Cup. David Warner, despite a rough patch in the ongoing IPL, retains his spot in the squad, as does Travis Head following his impressive performances for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The team boasts a strong all-round lineup with the likes of Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and the inclusion of Tim David as a finisher. Matthew Wade and Josh Inglis have been named as the wicketkeeping options, while Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar will handle the spin department. Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Ellis will lead the pace attack for Australia.
Australia’s T20 World Cup squad:
Mitch Marsh (c), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa.
