The former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag didn’t hold back when criticizing the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for their disappointing performance in this season’s Indian Premier League (IPL).
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are really struggling in this season’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. They seem to be lost on the field, and their chances of making it to the playoffs are pretty slim at this point, especially with the tough competition at the top.
The team, led by Faf du Plessis, finds itself at the bottom of the table after suffering five consecutive losses. Out of the seven games played so far, they’ve only managed to secure one win, and their confidence seems to be at an all-time low.
In their recent match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, RCB faced a crushing defeat. Their bowlers couldn’t contain the powerful batting lineup of the opposition, who posted the highest-ever total in IPL history, scoring 287 runs. Although RCB put up a fight with the bat, scoring 262 runs, they were never really in contention to win the match.
One of the main issues plaguing RCB is the lack of form among their batsmen, as well as their struggles with the ball. To have any chance of qualifying for the playoffs, they not only need to win all their remaining matches but also rely on other teams’ results to go their way. It’s certainly a tough situation for RCB, who have been chasing the elusive IPL trophy for quite some time now.
Former Indian cricketers Virender Sehwag and Manoj Tiwary have weighed in on RCB’s poor performance. Sehwag highlighted the absence of Indian support staff, suggesting that the predominance of overseas coaches in RCB’s setup might be affecting the development of local players.
“If you have 12-15 Indian players, just 10 overseas and your entire staff is made of foreigners, that’s an issue. Only a few of them are international players, rest are all Indians and half of them don’t even understand English. How will you motivate them? Who spends time with them? Who talks to them? I can’t see a single Indian staff member. At least there should be someone who the players can confide in,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.
Sehwag added: “Players need a comfort level which they are not getting presently. Players go blank in front of captain Faf du Plessis because if he asks something, they will have to answer. If the leader is Indian, you can share what’s going through your mind. But if you do that to an overseas player, you may be left out of the Playing XI in the next game. RCB need at least 2-3 Indian support staff.”
During the discussion, Manoj Tiwary expressed his frustration with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, highlighting numerous issues spanning from the auction strategies to the overall management. He emphasized the detrimental impact of letting go of key match-winning players.
“I know where the problem is. From the auction table to the management. All the good players of this franchise leave to go and play for other teams. One of them is the leading wicket-taker this season [Yuzvendra Chahall. You let them go.You don’t persist with Virat Kohli’s captaincy. led them to the 2016 final.” – Tiwary said.
