Babar Azam, the former captain of the Pakistan cricket team, has addressed critics who raised concerns about his strike rate in limited-overs cricket but he was trolled again.
Babar Azam has faced criticism for adopting a more cautious approach in white-ball cricket, particularly for not accelerating his scoring during crucial phases. In ODIs and T20Is, his strike rates stand at 88.75 and 129.12, respectively. Despite surpassing 10,000 runs in T20 cricket, his strike rate remains at 129.40. However, while leading Peshawar Zalmi in the 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL), Babar Azam has displayed an improvement in his strike rate, delivering noteworthy performances.
Currently leading the run charts in the ongoing PSL, Babar Azam has amassed 394 runs in 7 matches with an impressive average of 65.66 and a healthy strike rate of 152.12. His unbeaten 111* stands as his highest score in the tournament.
Following a narrow 4-run victory against Multan Sultans, where he was named Player of the Match, Babar Azam addressed the ongoing criticism of his T20 batting style. He openly acknowledged the discussions surrounding his strike rate and the calls for more aggressive shot-making, conceding that power-hitting isn’t his forte. He emphasized the importance of playing to his strengths in the game.
Speaking in the post-match presentation ceremony, Babar said: “People are talking a lot about my strike rate these days. People want me to go out there and hit sixes, but that is not my strength. I try to stick to my strength and get better every day.”
Babar Azam has been excelling as an opener in T20 cricket, a role he consistently plays for his franchise in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Yet, there’s been a change in his position within the Pakistan National Cricket Team’s T20Is. He’s been moved down to No. 3, while Saim Ayub now partners with Mohammad Rizwan at the beginning of the innings.
Following Babar Azam’s recent statement, he has once again become the target of online trolls, who are mocking him for expressing similar views.
