Rishabh Pant, the captain of Delhi Capitals, is gearing up for his much-awaited comeback to competitive cricket later this month through the IPL.
IPL 2024 is just around the corner, scheduled to kick off on March 22, and it holds special significance for wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant. After more than a year-long hiatus due to a harrowing car accident in December 2022, Pant is making a comeback to the cricket field. The spirited player underwent multiple surgeries for his injuries but is now back in action, currently undergoing training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
Reports suggest that Pant is set to receive the green light from the NCA on Tuesday, March 5, allowing him to join the Delhi Capitals camp for IPL 2024. Demonstrating his full fitness and eagerness to return, Pant showcased his trademark one-handed six during a practice match on Monday. It’s a promising sign for fans eagerly anticipating his comeback to the cricketing arena.
After undergoing a challenging recovery journey, the left-handed player has consistently shared updates with fans through social media, documenting various stages of his rehabilitation. Rishabh Pant has been stationed in Bengaluru for the past month, where the National Cricket Academy (NCA) is overseeing his progress. Recently, he participated in a practice match in Alur.
Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal has officially affirmed that Rishabh Pant will not only be part of IPL 2024 but will also assume the captaincy role for the team. In a recent interview, Jindal mentioned that the renowned cricketer will initially focus on his batting skills during the first half of the season.
“Rishabh is batting. He’s running. He has started his wicketkeeping. He is likely to be fully fit for the IPL. I am expecting Rishabh to play IPL and he will lead from match one. First seven games we are going to play him only as a batter and depending on how his body reacts, we will take a call for the rest of the IPL,” Jindal told ESPNcricinfo
Delhi Capitals are set to kick off their IPL 2024 campaign with five matches in the initial phase. The BCCI has unveiled the schedule for the first 17 days (March 22 to April 7), keeping in mind the General Elections. The Capitals’ first clash of the season will be on March 23, where they will face Punjab Kings.
