Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have faced a major setback ahead of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) with the news that their key batsman, Devon Conway, is expected to be out of action until May.
Chennai Super Kings received a significant setback just three weeks ahead of their quest to defend the title, as opener Devon Conway will be sidelined until May due to a left thumb injury. Conway, who played a crucial role in Chennai’s victory over Gujarat Titans in the 2023 final, underwent surgery on his thumb last week after sustaining the injury while wicket-keeping.
The injury occurred during the second T20I against an Adam Milne delivery that veered down the leg side, causing Conway to catch the ball awkwardly. Although he didn’t initially show signs of pain, he eventually had to call the physio and leave the field. The left-handed batsman, who was the Player of the Match in the final, is expected to miss a significant portion of IPL 2024, starting from March 22 and concluding with the final on May 26.
Conway had previously missed the first Test against Australia due to the same injury, leading to the inclusion of Henry Nicholls as cover, who will continue with the squad for the second Test.
The New Zealand star made his IPL debut in 2022, impressing with 924 runs at an average of 48.63 in 23 appearances for CSK, contributing significantly to their championship victory.
His absence will undoubtedly be a major setback for CSK, given his stellar performance last season, where he amassed 672 runs in 16 games, including a crucial 47-run knock in the final. CSK will commence their title defense against Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 22 in Chennai.
Although the IPL schedule for the first 21 games has been announced, the remainder will be disclosed after the announcement of the Indian general election dates. The opening match of the season will witness the defending champions CSK facing Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 22.
