Just before the start of the 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Devon Conway, the talented opening batsman from New Zealand and a key player for CSK, has unfortunately faced a setback with a thumb injury.

The wicketkeeper-batsman sustained an injury in the second T20I clash between New Zealand and Australia in Auckland.
The incident occurred during the second over of the game while Devon Conway was behind the stumps. Adam Milne delivered a rising delivery down the leg side to Steve Smith, and Conway, in an awkward fashion, managed to catch the ball. Although he didn’t seem to be in severe pain initially, Conway had to call for the physio. Following a consultation, the left-handed batsman decided to leave the field. Finn Allen took over the wicket-keeping duties.
Despite initial expectations of Conway returning later in the innings, he did not. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) later confirmed that he had left the field due to a left thumb injury.
Devon Conway’s injury appears to be more severe than initially expected. New Zealand Cricket provided an update on the opening batsman, stating that he has left the stadium to undergo a scan on his thumb.
“Devon Conway has left Eden Park to undergo an X-ray on his injured left thumb after sustaining a blow while wicket-keeping in tonight’s second T20I. A further update will be provided once more information is known,” stated New Zealand Cricket.
Less than a month remains for IPL 2024, and the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) might be facing a concern. Devon Conway, who plays a key role for them, has picked up some minor injuries during the current T20I series against Australia on home turf.
Devon Conway emerged as the batting sensation for CSK during the 2023 IPL, showcasing his prowess with an impressive tally of 672 runs in 16 matches at a striking rate of nearly 140. His ability to provide stability and unwavering consistency is pivotal for CSK. However, there’s a concern that if his injury proves significant, he could potentially sit out a few games in the early stages of IPL 2024.
