Bangladesh’s performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup took a downturn as they suffered a substantial 87-run defeat at the hands of the Netherlands at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, October 28.
Following the disappointing outcome, a video capturing a passionate Bangladeshi fan vigorously expressing his frustration has gone viral on the internet. In a spirited display of disappointment, the ‘Bangla Tigers’ supporter removed his shoe and proceeded to give himself a heartfelt self-reproachful tap, all while passionately critiquing the team’s lackluster performance.
In the earlier part of the day, Scott Edwards won the toss and elected to bat first. However, their side endured a tough start, losing their openers in the first three overs. It was Wesley Barresi and Colin Ackerman who stabilized the ship with a 59-run partnership. Despite this, the Dutch team found themselves at 107/5 after 27 overs as wickets continued to fall in clumps.
The skipper and Sybrand Engelbrecht then came together, forging a key 78-run partnership that took their team back into the game. Following their dismissals, Logan van Beek played some aggressive shots to give the Netherlands innings a late lift. They set Bangladesh a target of 230 runs on a pitch that seemed to offer reasonable opportunities.

The European squad had Bangladesh work hard for every run, showing outstanding talents in both their bowling and fielding. Bangladesh struggled, losing six wickets for just 70 runs, but some late resilience managed to carry them above the three-figure barrier. In the end, Scott Edwards and his squad achieved a decisive 87-run victory, with Paul van Meekeren earning the Player of the Match award for his superb stint of 4/23 in 7.2 overs.
This represented Bangladesh’s fifth consecutive loss, and they now find themselves at the 9th spot on the points table, barely above England. Despite this hard period, the dedicated Bangladesh fans have persisted in following their team through thick and thin. Shakib Al Hasan will need to encourage his players and aim to give their ardent followers something to rejoice in the forthcoming matches.
