The contribution from Mohammad Rizwan led Pakistan to a six-wicket victory against Sri Lanka at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Throughout his innings, he visibly struggled with cramps, showing the human side of the game.
In a momentous occasion that reverberated throughout the cricketing world, Pakistan’s batting sensation, Mohammad Rizwan, showcased his remarkable skills in a historic chase during the ODI World Cup match against Sri Lanka.
With Pakistan confronted by a formidable target of 345 runs, Rizwan emerged as the backbone of the team’s batting lineup. When he strode onto the field, Pakistan had already lost two wickets, managing only 37 runs on the board. The pressure was nothing short of immense. Nonetheless, Rizwan displayed unshakable composure as he embarked on an extraordinary partnership with Abdullah Shafique.
There was a comical segment of the game during Pakistan’s innings when Mohammad Rizwan experienced cramps. The match had several interruptions as the Pakistan physio came to assist Rizwan, who was clearly struggling with cramps. At times, he was quite theatrical in how he expressed his discomfort.
Commentators Simon Doull and Matthew Hayden even trolled Rizwan for his antics. Hayden went on to say that Rizwan should “get into the movies”!
Speaking about it after the match, the Pakistan keeper Mohammad Rizwan joked about it by saying that he was in pain at times and sometimes, it was his acting. “It happens with me sometimes. I was in pain but I fought through it. Sometimes cramps, sometimes acting,” he joked. He also added that he was feeling fine after the match.
Mohammad Rizwan expressed that the challenging chase was met with unwavering belief in their ability to secure the victory. He further emphasized their pride in representing their country and delivering a stellar performance. “It was a tough chase. Yes, Babar Azam got out but the belief was there that we could chase it down. It was a team game and we knew we could do it. The wicket out there was good to bat on,” he said.
After their highest-ever ODI chase, Pakistan have moved to the second spot in the points table of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Sri Lanka, who have lost both their matches, are currently in the eighth position.
