After securing an exhilarating eight-wicket victory in the fifth and ultimate T20I match against India, Romario Shepherd, the West Indies all-rounder, took a moment to share his thoughts on his bowling strategies throughout the game.
In a triumphant victory, Rovman Powell and his team secured the five-game series 3-2 at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill on August 13.
Shepherd showered praise upon Brandon King and Nicholas Pooran, the West Indies batters, for their explosive 107-run partnership for the second wicket. The 28-year-old also shared his strategy for dismissing Sanju Samson; he aimed to disturb the stumps and entice Suryakumar Yadav, his teammate on the opposite end, to play a straight shot down the field, resulting in the wicket. Impressively, he managed to take four wickets, conceding only 31 runs and ultimately securing the title of Player of the Match.
“It makes me feel happy because we ended up on the winning side. So thanks to Nicholas Pooran and Bradon King for playing so well. Right now from the ODIs to now, I have been hitting my areas and bowling well from the start to the end.
“[On bowling plans] Especially to Sanju, the plan was to hit the wicket and to Surya to get him to hit straight down the ground. [On the series win] It meant a lot to us especially because we’ve been going through some hard times in the past couple of months so to win against a team like India it means a lot for us and the fans,” Shepherd said during the post-match presentation.
India chose to bat first in the game after winning the toss, and they had a target of 166 runs. Suryakumar Yadav, who scored 61 runs off of 45 deliveries, was India’s leading scorer. Shepherd’s strong performance resulted in a four-wicket haul, although the Windies also picked up two wickets each from Akeal Hosein and Jason Holder.
The West Indies batsmen, on the other hand, presented a challenge for the Indian pacers, successfully completing the target chase with 12 balls remaining. Arshdeep Singh and Tilak Varma, two Indian bowlers, each succeeded in getting one wicket. The Caribbean team’s achievement in this match was notable as it was their first T20I series victory over India since 2017.
